NextSense, a spin-out from Alphabet's X moonshot lab, has raised $16 million in Series A funding in November 2025 for its in-ear EEG technology that monitors brain electrical activity during sleep. The company's earbuds capture clinical-grade brainwave data in a consumer-friendly form factor.

Technology

NextSense's earbuds use custom micro-EEG sensors positioned in the ear canal — one of the few locations where high-quality brain signals can be captured non-invasively outside a clinical lab. The device records sleep staging, spindle activity, slow oscillations, and other neural biomarkers throughout the night, uploading data to a cloud-based AI platform for analysis.

Clinical Applications

The company is pursuing two parallel tracks: a consumer sleep optimization product and a clinical platform for early detection of neurological conditions. Research suggests that changes in sleep brainwave patterns can precede clinical symptoms of Alzheimer's disease by years — making overnight EEG monitoring a potential screening tool for neurodegeneration.
